Greenman

This Greenman sculpture using impressions of native Gambel Oak leaves in porcelain clay, was inspired by the medieval English carvings representing pre-Christian images. Cobalt oxide was used to emphasize the vein patterns and background of the oak leaves which combined with Emerald Green glaze to create a beautiful deep blue-green color.

Various Voluminous Vases

All three vases are unglazed. The color comes from the different clays used.

Landscape Vase Series

Hand-built porcelain (with added ball clay) vases are 10" tall and have various combinations of overlapping glazes, such as Bamboo Ash Matte, Celadon Froth, Plum, Agate, Colonial White and Snowflake to create the landscapes.

To achieve the dimensional surface effect on this vase, a wax resist for the branches and layered glazes of Snowflake over Plum were used.

Garden gnome

This gnome has a new home in the garden keeping a watchful eye on the flowers. He was hand-built out of stoneware clay and is about 12 inches tall to the tip of his hat. Laguna's Peach and Dynasty Red cone 5 glazes were used.

A little bit of Utah

 The Sego Lily is the state flower of Utah which is depicted here in clay. The darker base is formed with Utah clay/soil.

 A Hackberry branch was impressed and darkened with a stain made from Dimple Dell, Utah soil.

This tray which is over a foot long, has impressed images also stained with Dimple Dell slip/stain.

Never enough bowls

The clay classes exploration of the plasticity of clay resulted in this collection of free-form/hand-built bowls. Quite beautiful with a glaze combination of Laguna's snowflake over celadon froth. And useful too!

Raku wren

Unfortunately this photo doesn't show all the beautiful iridescence of the glaze as a result of raku firing.
